weight -125lbs.

distinguishing features -Joey doesn't have many distinguishing features. Dark brown eyes; brown-blonde hair that's slightly longer than average and which he keeps messy on purpose. He has a slight scattering of freckles, but they're not too pronounced. His height probably makes him stand out amongst other boys of his age - and not because he's taller. Joey has always been pretty small, and he doesn't particularly like this, but he's been a couple of inches smaller than all the other boys for most of his life, so he's learned to live with it.
physical flaws -Joey hates the outbreak of spots on his forehead, which he attempts to disguise by sweeping his fringe across it. His face is also scarred in places from particularly bad acne when he was twelve, but that only lasted a year; now, his spots are confined to his forehead and sometimes on his chin. He doesn't tan easily at all, and dislikes his pale complexion; he's also uncomfortable about taking his shirt off in hot weather, since he's just thin, not toned or well-built like many of the other boys. Again, Joey also dislikes the fact that he's shorter than a lot of other boys of his age.
personal style -Joey tends to dress in simple clothing. He doesn't go in for anything extravagent; casual jeans or skinny jeans and checked shirts are his usual choice. He has a large number of jackets and faded band t-shirts, and seldom wears anything on his feet other than his Converse. People notice that he doesn't have a wide wardrobe - that's because he doesn't really have that much money to spend on clothes. Most of the things that Joey owns are faded and old, but the look actually suits him well. He looks out of place in a suit or anything more formal, and is most comfortable when lounging about in jeans and a plain t-shirt. He doesn't own a single tracksuit, since he never works out or anything like that, which means that his physique is slim rather than well-built.

dislikes -spring; rain; cats; failing exams; his parents; feeling rushed; hangovers; feeling sick; being ill; feeling like he's in the way; having a headache; having to dress up formally; wondering about his parents; judgemental people; wasps; being too crowded; not having enough money; bacon; maths; science; P.E; homework; coursework; conflict; feeling like a let down; never having enough socks; sex for the sake of sex; drugs; smoking; drinking too much.
strengths -Joey has always been honest. He is just as truthful as he needs to be - he's capable of a few white lies to save people's feelings, but he'd never tell a major lie, and this is a product of his upbringing. His mother told enough lies to his grandparents without him doing the same thing to them.
Joey is also a generally nice guy. He's caring, and he'd be the first one there if anybody needed anything. Even though this makes him quite easy to use and manipulate, Joey doesn't see that; he doesn't think that being considerate is a bad quality. He's the type of person who'd befriend someone who needed it, even if everyone else was laughing at them, and not care what was said about him because of it.
He's immature. Yes, Joey sees this as a strength, because it means that he's perfectly capable of having fun and having a good time. He's up for anything for a laugh, but at the same time he's not too stupid or reckless. Sometimes, he's not quite sure where to draw the line, but he never over steps it too far, and he's sensible enough to disapprove of things like sex for the sake of sex. He'd never get himself into a situation like that.
Despite this immaturity, however, Joey is trustworthy. Tell him anything, and he'll never let it slip to anyone else; he takes other people's trust very seriously, since he has a hard time telling anyone else the things in his own life that he's ashamed of.
Finally, Joey is hard-working. Even though he's not particularly naturally intelligent, he tries his best at school, and he'd like to be the first person in his family to make it as far as university without doing something to mess his life up.
weaknesses -Joey is incredibly gullible. As part of his open nature, he doesn't ever want to think the worst of anyone by suspecting that they might be lying to him, so he'll tend to believe anything that he's told. This can make him fairly easy to use or manipulate, but he never learns his lesson.
Joey's caring nature can also get him into other problems. He feels guilty about absolutely anything, even if it's not his fault, so he'll put someone else first every time, and this can sometimes be at his own expense. He'd rather miss out on something than let someone else do so, and again it makes him quite easy to use. Half the time, he values other people's happiness above his own.
Another of Joey's weaknesses is in his intelligence. Although he tries very hard, he's just not naturally intelligent enough to understand a lot of what he's supposed to be learning at school, and he's much better at making things or practical work. He's also musically talented - he can play the guitar - but with exam-based subjects, and maths in particular, he struggles horrendously.
Joey is a worrier. Although he's optimistic and can usually find the bright side of any situation, if he gets a concern in his head, he fixates on it and can't let it go. This can often lead to him becoming very paranoid and he'll talk himself out of doing something - asking somebody out, for instance - simply because he'll have convinced himself, (with no evidence), that they won't say yes.
Another of Joey's weaknesses is that he's incredibly forgetful. He'll agree to do something, and then will have completely forgotten about it by the next day.
Finally, although it isn't a personality weakness, Joey has an incredibly low immunity. He'll catch anything that goes round, suffers terribly from hayfever, and never seems to be anything but ill in some way.
fears -Joey doesn't suffer from it too badly, but he's always been slightly claustrophobic. It's more being squashed into a large crowd of people that sets him off - it can sometimes trigger a panic attack. He's not so bad with simply being in a small space; it's being crowded that he hates.
He also fears completely failing school. He knows he isn't the same person as either of his parents, so he won't turn into them, but every single person in his family has stumbled before they got anywhere, and Joey would like to be the first one who doesn't mess up. He's afraid that his whole life is just going to go the same way as everyone else in his family.
Finally, Joey fears people finding out about his past. His upbringing has always been a matter of great shame for him, which is why he never invites people back to his house or anything like that; he doesn't want people to find out his secret.
secret -I've never met my real parents. My grandparents raised me after my mother dumped me on their step - I was born premature and addicted to heroin. She died of an overdose two days later, and my dad disappeared.
overall personality -There's one thing that a past like Joey's leaves a person with, and that's a permanent sense of insecurity. He's never been able to get away from the fact that he's the son of a heroin addict, and for that reason he never feels good enough for anyone. It's the stem of most of his weaknesses - it's why he worries so much about what someone will say if he asks them out, and the cause of his physical defects; the lack of height and the constant illnesses.
On the other hand, however, Joey is optimistic. He's seldom seen without a smile on his face and he continually tries to find the bright side of any situation. He's happy, too - despite the catastrophic circumstances of his birth, he's been raised well since then by his grandparents, who care about him and love him, and he knows that things could have turned out a lot worse.
Joey's upbeat nature makes him likeable, and this is aided by how friendly he is. He'd be the first one there to help someone out, and if he sees someone who looks like they need a friend, then he'll befriend them. He generally hides any worries he has and will tend to put other people before himself.

history -There's never been any doubt that the Donnelly family have been blighted with misfortune. Every single member of Joey's family messed up their lives in some way in the past, and with his mother, it was choosing Luke Russell as her boyfriend. She was fourteen, and he was sixteen, and there was no doubt that he was exciting - he offered something new from her controlling parents who were determined that she make something of herself, since they never had. This thrill-seeking with Luke, however, backfired horrendously when she ended up hooked on heroin, throwing up over a toilet at two in the morning and realizing that she was pregnant.
She ran away with Luke, and tried to stop the drugs whilst she was pregnant, but this proved impossible, and it led to complications. When she went into labour a month before she was due, Luke ran, terrified of getting the blame when emergency services turned up. He never came back. Joey's mother gave birth to him on the fifteenth of September, aged fifteen herself, alone except for a friend who gave her more heroin as pain relief and helped her to deliver the baby boy. It was immediately apparent that the baby was not healthy, so, terrified and alone, Grace returned to Boswyth and left him on her parents' doorstep before disappearing again - two days later, she overdosed and died.
Meanwhile, Joey's grandparents had taken him to hospital, where he was at once put into intensive care. For a long time, it was touch and go, and he was lucky to escape any lasting health problems. However, the problems in his birth have left him smaller than the other boys for his whole life, and he's always had an extremely low immunity. He had a lot of health problems when he was younger - his lung collapsed when he was four - but he has no serious health concerns now, apart from the fact that he's constantly got a cold or feels sick. He catches everything that goes around, which does his head in, but he's learned to live with it.
When he was ten, Joey's grandad gave him the best present he'd ever receieved - a battered, second hand Fender Strat and guitar lessons along with it. Joey can sing, too, but he doesn't take his music too seriously - if he can get a few people together, he might take part in a talent show or play a few impromptu gigs if anyone will have them, but it's not like he's part of a dedicated band. He doesn't have the time - when he's not with his friends, he's studying, since he has to work incredibly hard just to keep his head above the water in most of his lessons.
Joey's always been ashamed of his family. He never has sleepovers, (although he'll go to other people's), and no one has ever been invited back to his house - people know he lives with his grandparents, of course, since it's impossible to hide something like that in a place like Boswyth, but he's been careful to never let anyone from school know the truth about his parents, and the fact that he's never even met them. Joey's determined to be the first one in his family to get somewhere, but the fact that he's struggling so much at school even though he tries his best is making him afraid that he's never going to go anywhere either, and he's almost tempted to just give in.

Jasey looked like she had been crying, but her expression was now hostile and Christian was somewhat taken aback. He had expected to find her in floods of tears; expected it to be easy to pull her back into his arms. He'd even thought he might look like some sort of hero, chasing after her with his face a bloody mess following a fight in her defence with Alex - but of course it wasn't like that. How could it be? The reality was that he was a silly little boy who couldn't keep his trousers zipped up, and the result of that was that he'd cheated on a girl who was dying of cancer with her best friend, and then been beaten up after an ill-advised attack on the boy whose girlfriend he had slept with; the same boy who happened to be his best friend of the past seven years. God, he was a bastard.
He chose to answer the question she had halfway asked about his face first, because that was easier than what he had to discuss next. "Alex," he replied numbly, his voice slightly thick because of the bust lip and the fact that the fight might have dislodged a tooth. His broken nose trickled more blood over his mouth; he resisted the urge to spit on the pavement. He must look a mess. His mother was going to go mad - she had freaked about the bump on the back of his head, and that hadn't even really been a particularly visible injury.
He stood there staring at her for a moment, his head still reeling from the things she had shouted at him. He couldn't believe it. He didn't want to believe it. How could Jasey be dying of cancer? A world without Jasey Rae in it wasn't a world at all. Tentatively, he reached out for her hand, half expecting her to snatch it away.
He opened his mouth to speak, but the words stuck in his throat. He had to wait a moment before he finally managed to say what he wanted to, and even then it didn't come out quite as gently as he would have liked. He just sounded confused, and scared, and disbelieving. "Jasey ... what did you mean? On the beach? You ... you've got cancer?" His eyes found hers; he held her gaze with fear and confusion written all over his bloodied face. How could she have cancer? That was something you saw on the news or read about in the papers, or occasionally heard about from friends who'd lost relatives to it. It didn't happen to your girlfriend; not in real life. "Jasey?"
